Week of Prayer

14-20 May 2018

As we start our termly week of prayer, please make every effort to join us in prayer each day. Take time to read the relevant passage of Scripture, take a moment to look for personal application and then pray. If you should hear from the Lord about any matter concerning the church please speak to Ian Smith (Senior Minister) or an elder. Thank you.

Monday May 14th

(Consider fasting tomorrow)

Read:

The Tower of Babel Genesis 11:1-9
Between the great accounts of Noah & Abraham we find the story of Babel Here, the people moved from dependence to independence, “Let us - make, build, reach, be known ...” The outcome was scattering, confusion and disunity

Apply:

Pentecost reversed the tragic outcomes of Babel
Instead of us, God! Gad made, built, reached down and became known Many languages but now one new tongue; rather than scattering, unity

Pray:

Gal 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.”
  • For a prevailing prayer to break down spiritual forces of darkness
  • For our leaders (nationally and locally) and public servants
  • For Girls Brigade Camp (18-20 May) - teaching, safety and fun!
  • For Holy Spirit inspired revival in our nation
  • For Billericay Baptist Church - our Pastor Ian, Andrea & family

Tuesday May 15th

(Consider fasting to the degree you are able)

Read:

Feast of Weeks (Shavuot) Leviticus 23:9-14
Shavuot is 50 days after the Passover and Pentecost (meaning 50) is fifty days after Christ’s resurrection. Two loaves were to be waved before the Lord; Jesus (the first-fruit & the Bread of Life) was to be lifted up at Calvary.

Apply:

Shavuot is also known as the feast of Ingathering; on the day of Pentecost 3000 souls were ‘ingathered’. Jews associate Shavuot with the giving of the Law, for the Christian it’s the giving of the Holy Spirit (to both, it’s a birthday).

Pray:

  • For an ingathering of souls - many, many souls to be saved!
  • For the world - the poor, marginalised, orphaned and homeless
  • For our Nation - for righteous laws especially concerning gender & marriage
  • For the church - the word of God to be fearlessly preached
  • For youngsters sitting exams - good outcomes and sound mental health
  • For Billericay Baptist Church - Tom, Jo and Tim

Wednesday May 16th

Read:

Moses is commanded to speak to the Rock at Kadesh Numbers 20:1-13
38 years after Moses was told to strike the rock at Rephidim (Ex 17), the people stood in need once more. This time, Moses must speak to the Rock because the Rock need only be struck once (the rock is Christ, 1Cor 10:4)

Apply:

Jesus was struck at Calvary and His redemptive blood flowed
Now, he is to be spoken to so that His life might flow to whoever asks
His call remains, “If any one is thirsty, let him come to me and drink” (Jn 7:37)

Pray:

  • For today’s manna, remembering man shall not live on bread alone
  • For the world - justice, especially for persecuted Christians
  • For prison ministry: services, writing, marking and mentoring
  • For the UK Church - to demonstrate and spread the Gospel
  • For Billericay Baptist Church - our Elders, Trustees, Deacons, DG Leaders and all who lead us in worship

Thursday May 17th

Read:

The River of Life that flows from God’s Temple Ezekiel 47:1-12
600 years before Pentecost, Ezekiel had a vision of a river that started as a trickle but grew into a mighty refreshing river. He was called deeper and deeper, until the flow took his whole weight, ever-leading & revealing

Apply:

The river exists, it’s a type of the Spirit. How far have I ventured?
It’s God’s River of Life. Are we in the flow, or with one foot on dry land? Today, ask that the salty, stagnant water of our lives may become fresh!

Pray:

  • For a deeper personal walk with God in the fullness of His Spirit
  • For the world - against radical Islam, terrorism & for the peace of Jerusalem
  • For our Nation - especially Brexit negotiations
  • For community activities - Street Pastors, CAP Courses and Food Banks
  • For Billericay Baptist Church - Gary, Charlotte & all who work with Children & Youth and Schools Ministry Billericay

Friday May 18th

Read:

Peter preached at Pentecost, using these words from Joel 2:28-32
When people truly repent, God an amazing promises; an outpouring of His Spirit on all people with attendant signs and wonders. As a result, many will be saved. God’s intention was made known 800 years before Christ.

Apply:

Vessels are cleaned for one reason: to be filled! God’s new wine needs new skins. It’s not what we are that is of utmost importance, but rather what we carry
The lost world needs Spirit-filled and Spirit-fuelled Christians. Are you?

Pray:

  • For purified hearts, filled to overflowing (pressed down & running over)
  • For a Holy Spirit outpouring and revival in our land
  • That we will be witnesses for Christ just where we are and where He sends us
  • For a right attitude to the well being of God’s world
  • For the ongoing development of vision in every aspect of church
  • For Billericay Baptist Church to rise up in prayer

Saturday May 19th

Read:

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit John 14:15-30 (read also 15:5-16)
The requirement is both to love and obey and then the promise of the Holy Spirit. He will only lead us into righteousness - when committed to obedience, He empowers, bringing revelation and peace. We are told in advance so we might believe!

Apply:

The two passages sandwich teaching about the vine and the branches (ch15) How much do you depend upon and draw from the life of the vine?
To be grafted is to love and obey, do you live in a ‘grafted’ way?

Pray:

  • For us to become increasingly longing for & dependent upon the Holy Spirit
  • For the world - pray for the mission partner God lays on your heart
  • For harmony in our nation and neighbourhood
  • For the church to continually seek to maintain God’s bond of peace
  • For Billericay Baptist Church to touch community with God’s love and to see a flow of people coming to Christ (esp. through upcoming Alphas)

Sunday May 20th

Read:

The fulfilment of the promise!! Acts 1:4-11 and 2:1-14
Jesus’ last words were to wait for the Father’s gift, the Holy Spirit
The disciples were together & in the same place (both needed to happen) Every promise (prophecy) was fulfilled and the effect of Eden & Babel nullified!

Apply:

Do you regularly wait for power from on high?
Are we ‘Christened’ or Baptised? Just a sprinkling or a submerging in the Spirit? Perhaps the biggest evidence of this baptism is the type of witness we’ve become.

Pray:

  • Esther bathed in the King’s oil (2:12), may we be marinated in the Holy Spirit.
  • For the world - conflicts, tragedies and agencies that fearlessly work for justice
  • For the Queen, our Government and Opposition parties
  • For the Mental Health Awareness Day (June 30th) to bring help & hope
  • For us to seek to be effective witnesses for Christ & for unsaved family members
  • For Billericay Baptist Church to obey Christ in all things
